Achillbeg Lighthouse is located off the southern tip of Achill Island in County Mayo, Ireland. The lighthouse was built in 1965, replacing the one on Clare Island, and serves as a vital aid to navigation for mariners in the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse stands on the southern tip of the island, which is part of a Gaeltacht area where the Irish language is spoken.
The lighthouse is situated on a small island called Achillbeg, which has a population of just one person, according to the 2016 census. The island is steeped in history, having been inhabited for over 3,000 years. In 1965, the island's inhabitants were evacuated and relocated to the main island and nearby mainland.
Achillbeg Lighthouse has an interesting history, with a book about the life and times of the island and its people, "Achillbeg - The Life of an Island" by Jonathan Beaumont, published in 2005. The lighthouse also holds a connection to Irish boxing legend Johnny Kilbane, who won his first championship in 1912, and a small plaque was erected on the island to commemorate this event. Today, the lighthouse remains an important aid to navigation, standing as a testament to the island's rich history and cultural heritage.
