Amédée Lighthouse

The Amédée Lighthouse is located on Amédée Island in New Caledonia, approximately 24 kilometers from Nouméa on Grande Terre. The lighthouse was built in 1865 and features a 16-sided tapered tower with a balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 56 meters. The tower is made of cast iron and has a distinctive white color. It was constructed in Paris as a demonstration before being disassembled and transported to New Caledonia.

The lighthouse has a rich history, dating back to 1859 when the acting Commandant of New Caledonia requested its construction to aid ships navigating into the port of Nouméa. The French lighthouse commission proposed a pre-fabricated iron design due to the lack of skilled workers in the colony. The lighthouse was designed by Léonce Reynaud and was first lit on November 15, 1865. It is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world, with 247 steps, and was the first metallic lighthouse constructed in France.

The Amédée Lighthouse is now a popular tourist attraction and an important aid to navigation, signaling the entrance to the passage of Boulari, one of only three natural passages in the reef surrounding New Caledonia. Its light has a range of 20 nautical miles and a characteristic of two white flashes every 15 seconds. The lighthouse has undergone significant events throughout its history, including its construction and transportation from Paris, and continues to play a vital role in the region's maritime safety.
