Bathurst Lighthouse

The Bathurst Lighthouse is situated on Rottnest Island in Western Australia, specifically on Bathurst Point in the northeast of the island. It was activated in 1900 in response to a series of shipping disasters in the area, including the loss of the City of York in 1899. The lighthouse was erected to guide ships safely through the reefs near the island.

The lighthouse has undergone several changes over the years. Originally, the light source and lantern house were intended for Cape Leeuwin but were instead built on Rottnest Island. In 1920, the original acetylene flame was replaced by a flasher, making the keeper's role redundant. An electric light was later installed in 1986. The lighthouse serves as the rear light in the pair of Kingston Reef's leading lights, guiding ships departing from Fremantle through the reefs.

The Bathurst Lighthouse is listed on the State Register of Heritage Places and is considered an important part of Western Australia's maritime history. The original land allocation for the lighthouse was reduced in size in 1934. Today, the lighthouse remains an important aid to navigation, characterized by a group of four flashes that occur every sixteen seconds, and is a notable landmark on Rottnest Island.
