Blitvenica Lighthouse

The Blitvenica Lighthouse is located on a small islet in the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of Žirje, Croatia. The lighthouse was built in 1872 and stands at a height of 21 meters, with a lantern and gallery at the top. It is an octagonal tower constructed from stone and features a white lantern that is visible from a distance of 24 nautical miles.

The lighthouse has a rich history, with its construction often delayed due to the challenges of bringing materials to the remote islet. The keepers were often stranded on the island for extended periods, relying on minimal provisions and a water cistern to sustain themselves. The lighthouse was automated in 1990, but in 2002, the keepers returned to the site to maintain and secure the structure.

Today, the Blitvenica Lighthouse is operated and maintained by the state-owned company Plovput. The lighthouse has been featured on a set of commemorative stamps by the Croatian postal service in 2011, and it remains an important aid to navigation in the region. Despite its remote location, the lighthouse has a significant range, and its light can be seen for 24 nautical miles, making it an essential beacon for mariners in the area.
