The Bogskär Lighthouse is located on the Bogskär skerries of Åland in the Baltic Sea, Finland. It was built in 1882 on Sweden's initiative, with a steel construction and a three-metre granite plinth. The original lighthouse had a height of 25 meters and seven floors, and was painted red.
The lighthouse has a rich and interesting history. It was damaged in a storm in 1889 and underwent repairs in 1894, which included strengthening the structure and filling the space between its inner and outer shells with concrete. A wireless telegraph was installed in 1905, replacing the previous communication method of light signals to passing ships. However, the original lighthouse was destroyed by a German warship in 1915 during the First World War.
A new automated lighthouse was constructed in 1922 on concrete pillars, and was restored in 1981 with the addition of a helipad. The current lighthouse is 22 meters tall, with a focal height of 28 meters, and is painted with blue and white horizontal bands. It is now solar-powered and has a range of 9 nautical miles. The lighthouse is an important aid to navigation in the Baltic Sea and continues to serve its purpose to this day.
