Buck Island Light

Buck Island Light is located on Buck Island, which is situated approximately 2 miles south of the island of St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. The island is part of the Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge, a 45-acre protected area established in 1969. The refuge is characterized by a thorn scrub habitat with rocky coastline surrounded by spectacular reefs.

The lighthouse on Buck Island is a square prism metal skeletal tower with a balcony and light, and it is still maintained by the United States Coast Guard. The island was transferred to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service due to its value for migratory birds. The surrounding waters contain reefs and a shipwreck that attract large numbers of snorkelers, divers, and boaters.

The history of Buck Island is interesting, with the island being administered as part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife complex. The island is home to a variety of fish and animals, including endangered sea turtles, and Turtle Cove on the northwest side is densely populated with sea turtles. Tours of Turtle Cove are available from St. John and St. Thomas, making Buck Island a popular destination for nature lovers and those interested in history and wildlife.
