This historic beacon, also known as the Burgos Lighthouse, crowns Vigia de Nagpartian Hill in the town of Burgos, Ilocos Norte. Perched at the northwesternmost point of Luzon, it watches over the rocky coast of the town where Spanish galleons once passed.
The structure is an octagonal stone tower painted white, with a white lantern atop. The tower rises 20 m from its base, while the light sits at a focal height of 118 m above sea level. A first‑order Fresnel lens produces a group of three white flashes every five seconds (Fl (3) W 5s), providing a distinctive signal for mariners.
The lighthouse was part of the Spanish government’s 1857 master plan to illuminate the archipelago. Designed in 1887 by Magin Pers y Pers and completed by the Lighthouse Service under Guillermo Brockman, the stone tower was first lit on 30 March 1892. The original lamp suffered damage in the 1990 earthquake and was subsequently replaced.
More than a century later the beacon remains active, continuing to guide vessels entering the Philippines from the north. Recognised as a cultural heritage structure, it still serves as a functional aid to navigation while standing as a prominent landmark along the Ilocos coast.
