Cape Bonavista Light

The Cape Bonavista Light is a lighthouse located on the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland, Canada. It was built between 1841 and 1843 to mark the entrances to Bonavista and Trinity bays and to aid mariners headed for Labrador. The lighthouse features a two-story wooden building constructed around a masonry tower surmounted by a lantern and stands at a height of 11 meters.

The lighthouse has a rich history, with its first lamps and reflectors coming from the Bell Rock Lighthouse in Scotland. Over the years, the apparatus was replaced by a catoptric system from the Isle of May in Scotland. The lighthouse operated until 1962, when it was replaced by an electric light on a nearby steel skeleton tower. In the 1970s, the lighthouse was restored for use as a museum by the provincial government.

Today, the Cape Bonavista Light is a provincial museum, containing an exhibition about life in a lighthouse during the 1870s. The building features furniture and artifacts representing the pre-1870 period, including the rare catoptrics lighting system, made up of Argand oil lamps and parabolic mirrors of polished silver. The lighthouse is now a popular tourist destination, offering a glimpse into the region's maritime history and the lives of lighthouse keepers and their families.
