Cape Bruny Lighthouse

The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is located at the southern tip of Bruny Island, Tasmania, Australia. It was built in 1838 and is the second oldest extant lighthouse tower in Australia. The lighthouse is a conical tower with a double balcony and lantern, standing 13 meters tall, and was initially illuminated by a Wilkins lantern consuming one pint of sperm whale oil per hour. In 1892, the whale oil was replaced by colza oil, and further improvements were made in 1903 with the replacement of the original staircase with a cast-iron staircase and the Wilkins lantern with a Chance Brothers lantern.

The lighthouse was continuously staffed for 158 years until it was decommissioned on August 6, 1996, and replaced by a nearby light tower. It was managed by the South Bruny National Park and is now part of the park's historic site. The light station area, including the lighthouse, was incorporated into the national park in December 2000. The lighthouse's original features, including the cast-iron staircase and Chance Brothers lantern, remain intact today, offering a glimpse into Tasmania's maritime history.

The Cape Bruny Lighthouse was commissioned by Governor George Arthur in 1835 after a series of shipwrecks south of Bruny Island. The project was built by convict labor using locally quarried dolerite over two years. The lighthouse's longest history of being continuously staffed and its unique features make it a significant and historic landmark in Tasmania's coastal region.
