Cape Pine Light

The Cape Pine Lighthouse is located on Cape Pine, Avalon Peninsula, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It was built in 1851 by British architect and engineer Alexander Gordon, and features a cast iron tower with a cylindrical shape, a balcony, and a lantern. The tower stands at a height of 15 meters and has a focal height of 96 meters, with a distinctive white and red horizontal banding and a white lantern.

The lighthouse has a range of 16 nautical miles and a characteristic flash of white light every 5 seconds, along with a fog horn that sounds every 60 seconds. The Canadian Coast Guard maintains the site and employs a keeper. The lighthouse was designated a National Historic Site in 1974, and has undergone restoration work, including a complete painting in 2007.

The Cape Pine Lighthouse has an interesting history, having been built in response to the loss of shipping and life near Cape Pine in the decades before 1850. The Admiralty in the UK had become concerned about the dangers of the area, and the House of Assembly in Newfoundland requested assistance to build a lighthouse. The lighthouse was the first prefabricated cast iron lighthouse in Newfoundland, and it has played an important role in Maritime safety ever since. It is located at the edge of a 315-foot black slate cliff, about 25 kilometers southwest of Trepassey, and can be accessed by an 8-kilometer gravel road.
