The Capo Carbonara Lighthouse is situated at the extremity of the granite promontory of Capo Carbonara, in the comune of Villasimius, on the eastern side of the Gulf of Cagliari, in Sardinia, Italy. The current lighthouse was built in 1974, replacing the first one constructed in 1917, which was a skeletal tower. The new lighthouse is a 5-meter-high cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern on a masonry base, painted white. It stands at a height of 120 meters above sea level.
The lighthouse is fully automated and managed by the Marina Militare. It emits a single white flashing light in a 7.5-second period, visible up to 23 nautical miles of distance. The optic system consists of a Type OR S2 Bivalva lens with a focal length of 250 mm. The lighthouse is an important aid to navigation in the Gulf of Cagliari, and its current status is active.
The location of the lighthouse has a rich history, with several defensive towers built in the area, including the Fortezza Vecchia built by the Aragonesi in the 16th century. The small tower light of Capo Carbonara was built in 1578, and the area has been used for defensive purposes for centuries. Today, the Capo Carbonara Lighthouse is an important landmark and a significant aid to navigation in the Mediterranean Sea.
