Capo Santa Maria di Leuca Lighthouse

The Capo Santa Maria di Leuca Lighthouse is located in Santa Maria di Leuca, Apulia, Italy. This active lighthouse was built in 1864 and first lit on September 6, 1866. The structure features an octagonal prism tower with a balcony and lantern atop a 2-storey keeper's house, made of brick and concrete base, standing at a height of 48 meters. It has a white tower marking and is operated by the Marina Militare.

The lighthouse has an impressive history. It was built on a project by Achille Rossi and was initially equipped with a first-order Fresnel Lens. However, this was removed in 1954 and replaced with a Type OR T6 lens. The lighthouse emits three white flashes in a 15-second period, visible up to 24 nautical miles. It also displays a red occulting light every 4 seconds over the shoal to the east.

Today, the Capo Santa Maria di Leuca Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, operated by the Marina Militare. It is managed by the Italian Navy and continues to serve as a vital beacon for maritime traffic in the region.
