The Chicken Rock Lighthouse is located offshore on Chicken Rock, just off the Isle of Man. The lighthouse was completed in 1874 and was designed by David and Thomas Stevenson. It is a tapered cylindrical tower with a gallery and lantern, constructed of granite blocks, and stands at a height of 44 meters.
The lighthouse was built to address the problem of fog obscuring the two lights on the nearby Calf of Man, which formed a transit with the Chickens and exposed shipping to danger. The need for the light on Chicken Rock was identified as early as 1866, and approval to start work on the lighthouse was given in 1868. The total cost of the construction was £64,559, which is equivalent to a much larger amount in today's money.
The Chicken Rock Lighthouse is still an active lighthouse, although it was automated in 1961. It has a fascinating history, including a fire in 1960 that heavily damaged the interior and led to the automation of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was originally fueled by paraffin and had a characteristic of flashing white every 5 seconds. Today, the lighthouse is managed by the Northern Lighthouses Board and continues to play an important role in guiding ships safely through the area.
