Cromwell Point Lighthouse, also known as Valentia Lighthouse, is a 19th-century lighthouse located on Valentia Island in County Kerry, Ireland. The lighthouse stands 15 meters tall and is situated on Cromwell Point, where a 16th-century fort once occupied the site. The fort, Cromwell Fleetwood Fort, was built in the 16th century and ceased operations in 1669.
The lighthouse itself was constructed between 1837 and 1842, based on the design of George Halpin, and was first lit on February 1, 1841. The total cost of the construction was close to 11,000 British pounds. Originally, the lighthouse was staffed by a single lightkeeper and his family, but after automation in 1947, only part-time supervision was required.
Today, the Cromwell Point Lighthouse provides guidance for vessels entering Valentia Harbour from the north and is an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse has a range of 17 nautical miles for white and 15 nautical miles for red, with a characteristic of Fl WR 2s. It has been open to visitors since June 2, 2013, giving people a glimpse into the rich history of the site.
