Dunmore East Lighthouse

Dunmore East Lighthouse is a prominent landmark situated in the town of Dunmore East, County Waterford, Ireland. The lighthouse is located on the west side of Waterford Harbour, overlooking the southeastern coast of Ireland. It has been a guiding light for mariners for centuries, helping them navigate the harbour and surrounding waters.

The Dunmore East Lighthouse is currently standing, however, it's unclear if it's still operational. The lighthouse has a rich history dating back to the 14th century, when the manor at Dunmore East was granted to Heverbricht by King Henry II. The property changed hands several times, with the de Boitler and Le Flemming families owning much of the manor by the early 14th century. In 1640, Lord Power, the owner of Curraghmore, held the property. The current lighthouse was not built until much later, but it serves as a testament to the town's long history as a fishing and tourist destination.

Interestingly, the town's name "Dunmore East" is derived from the Irish phrase "Dún Mór Thóir," meaning "east big fort." The area has been home to various settlements throughout history, including Iron Age people who established a promontory fort overlooking the sea. Today, Dunmore East is a thriving town with a population of over 1,700 residents, according to the 2022 census.
