Farol de São Miguel-O-Anjo
The Lighthouse of São Miguel-o-Anjo, also known as Farol de São Miguel-o-Anjo, is located in the civil parish of Aldoar, Foz do Douro e Nevogilde, in the municipality of Porto, Portugal. The lighthouse was built in 1527 and is considered Portugal's oldest existing lighthouse and one of the oldest in Europe. It was designed by Italian architect Francesco da Cremona and completed in 1538.
The lighthouse is a rectangular stone tower with a cupola, attached to a one-story chapel. The tower is unpainted and features a sculpted relief. It stands at a height of 8 meters and was initially used to assist navigation off the coast. Over the years, the chapel began to operate as a conference hall for pilots, and an annex was constructed in 1841 to house the Fiscal Guard.
The Lighthouse of São Miguel-o-Anjo was decommissioned in 1882 and replaced by the Lighthouse of Senhora da Luz. Despite this, it has a rich history, having served as a meeting hall for a contingent of the National in the 20th century. The property is now under the control of the Instituto Português do Património Arquitetónico and is considered a Property of Public Interest. Today, it stands as a significant historical landmark in Portugal, showcasing the country's maritime history and architectural heritage.
