Farol do Bugio

The Farol do Bugio is a lighthouse situated on an island in the estuary of the River Tagus, about ten kilometres west of Lisbon, Portugal. It falls under the municipality of Oeiras in Lisbon District. The lighthouse was built between 1693 and 1775, with the original structure being destroyed during the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The new lighthouse was completed in 1775 and has undergone several renovations and updates over the years.

The lighthouse stands at a height of 14 metres and has a focal height of 28 metres. It has a Vega VLB44 8-tier LED Beacon and a range of 15 nautical miles. The lighthouse is characterized by its bright green light, which flashes every 5 seconds. The light was automated in 1981, allowing for remote control, and the lighthouse has been unmanned since then.

The Farol do Bugio has a rich history, with the fort on which it stands being constructed in 1590 to defend against attacks by French and Turkish pirates. The lighthouse has played an important role in aiding navigation in the River Tagus estuary and marking the entrance to the port of Lisbon. Despite being exposed to the harsh sea conditions, the lighthouse has been well-maintained, with numerous repairs and consolidations carried out over the years to ensure its continued operation.
