Goods Island Light is a lighthouse located on Goods Island, Queensland, Australia, serving as the rear light of the Goods Island Range. The lighthouse was constructed in 1886 and stands on the highest point of the island. It has a cylindrical tower with a balcony and a lantern, clad with corrugated iron, and is topped with a red lantern dome. The structure is approximately 18 feet high.
The lighthouse has an interesting history. Initially, a signalling station was established on the island in 1877. Later, pearl fishers requested a light at the western entrance to Torres Strait, leading to the installation of a temporary light on the signalman's quarters in 1882. The current lighthouse was built in 1886, constructed entirely by government workers, making it unique among Queensland lighthouses. During World War II, the island was taken over by the Royal Australian Navy, which constructed defensive batteries around it. The lighthouse was automated in 1973 and later converted to solar power in 1988.
Goods Island Light serves as an important navigation aid, pointing out the entrance to Normanby Sound. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority manages the lighthouse, ensuring its continued operation. Its range is approximately 11 nautical miles, providing essential guidance to mariners in the region.
