The lighthouse forms part of the Guia Fortress complex, a 17th‑century colonial fort, chapel and lighthouse ensemble perched on Guia Hill, the highest point of the Macau peninsula in the São Lázaro district of Macau. It sits within the UNESCO‑listed Historic Centre of Macau.

The tower is a massive cylindrical concrete‑clad stone structure with a double balcony and a lantern. Its white walls are accented with gold trim and the lantern roof is painted red. The tower rises 13.5 m, while the light sits at a focal height of 108 m above sea level, giving a nominal range of 16 nmi and a visibility of about 20 miles in clear weather.

Construction began in 1864 and was completed in 1865, making it the first western‑style lighthouse in the Far East. Completed in 1865, it became operational that year; it was taken out of service from 1874 until 1910, after which it returned to operation.

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation and is cared for by Macau Heritage (Guia Fortress). It is part of the Historic Centre of Macau World Heritage site and is open to visitors, who can view the tower and its surroundings.
