The Hellevoetsluis Lighthouse is located in Hellevoetsluis, the Netherlands. It was built in 1822 and designed by Jan Valk, with a contract signed on February 23 of that year. The original tower was constructed with bricks, plastered, and painted white, with a black belt added in 1899. The lighthouse underwent significant renovations in 1901, including a change from a pointed cone cap to a spherical cap and a new dark green color.
The Hellevoetsluis Lighthouse has a rich history, with the port of Hellevoetsluis serving as an important naval port until the 19th century. Before the lighthouse was built, ships entering the port were warned by a lantern, but this was deemed insufficient, leading to the construction of the lighthouse. The light was initially oil-fired but was replaced with electric light in 1933. During World War II, the light was extinguished due to damage to the tower and the war effort.
Today, the Hellevoetsluis Lighthouse is still one of about thirty active lighthouses in the Netherlands, although it is no longer in use as a beacon. The light has not been officially extinguished, and the lighthouse remains a significant landmark and a Rijksmonument since 1982. The lighthouse has undergone several transformations over the years, including renovations and changes to its appearance, but it continues to be an important part of the region's history and heritage.
