The Ilha de Santana Lighthouse is located on the island of the same name at the east entrance of the Baía de São Marcos in Maranhão, Brazil. The first lighthouse was built and lit on June 1, 1831, although its construction was authorized since June 1822. This original tower was 31 meters high and had a rotating catoptrics lens with a range of 18 nautical miles.
However, due to sea erosion, the first lighthouse was threatened and efforts to save it were unsuccessful. As a result, a new lighthouse was built in 1961, which also eventually fell victim to sea erosion. A third lighthouse was then constructed, a cast iron pyramidal skeletal tower prefabricated in England, and was lit on December 2, 1883. This tower was later replaced by the current cylindrical tower, built in concrete with a balcony and lantern, which was lit on July 1, 1964.
The Ilha de Santana Lighthouse is currently active and managed by the Brazilian Navy. It emits two long alternate white flashes and one red every 51 seconds, visible up to 31 nautical miles for the white light and 25 nautical miles for the red light. The lighthouse has a height of 49 meters and is identified by the country code number BR-0804. Despite its tumultuous history, the Ilha de Santana Lighthouse remains an important aid to navigation in the region.
