Inisheer Lighthouse

The Inisheer Lighthouse is a 19th century lighthouse located on the island of Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands in County Galway, Ireland. It was built in 1857 and marks the south-eastern entrance to Galway Bay and the Port of Galway. The lighthouse stands at a height of 34 meters and has a range of 18 nautical miles.

The Inisheer Lighthouse is part of a series of lighthouses built on the Aran Islands to guide vessels into the bay. The Eeragh Lighthouse, located on the north-western side of the islands, was also constructed at the same time and became operational in 1857. The lighthouse is currently automated and is managed by the Commissioners of Irish Lights.

The history of the lighthouse is tied to the early days of navigation on the Aran Islands. The first lighthouse on the islands was built in 1818 on Inishmore, but it was deemed to be poorly positioned and was eventually replaced by the Inisheer and Eeragh lighthouses. The Inisheer Lighthouse has become an iconic landmark on the Aran Islands and remains an important aid to navigation for vessels entering Galway Bay.
