The Kish Lighthouse is located off the coast of Dublin, Ireland, on the Kish Bank, a shallow sand bank approximately 11 kilometers west of the city. The lighthouse was built in 1965 to replace a light vessel that had been marking the sandbank since 1811. The current structure is a telescopic cylindrical tower with four balconies, a lantern, and a helipad on top. It stands at a height of 100 feet and has a projected lifetime of 75 years.
The Kish Lighthouse is an important aid to navigation for sailors and ferry passengers passing through Dublin Bay and Dún Laoghaire harbour. Its beam is visible for 27 nautical miles and operates at a candlepower of between two and three million, depending on visibility conditions. The lighthouse was automated in 1992, and the keepers came ashore.
The Kish Bank has a tragic history of shipwrecks, with many vessels lost on the shallows over the years. Some notable wrecks include the Vesper in 1876 and the Norwegian MV Bolivar in 1947. The greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea occurred when the RMS Leinster was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in 1918, resulting in over 500 lives lost. Today, the Kish Lighthouse remains an important aid to navigation and a reminder of the region's maritime history.
