Kvitsøy Lighthouse is located in Kvitsøy Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is situated on the west side of the village of Ydstebøhamn on the island of Kvitsøy, marking the entrance to the Boknafjorden, the main shipping route to the city of Stavanger. The first lighthouse at the site was established in 1700, and the present lighthouse was built in 1829.
The lighthouse is an octagonal stone tower, 27 meters tall, with a 2nd order Fresnel lens at the top. The building is painted white, with the lantern on the top painted red. The light sits at an elevation of 45.2 meters above sea level and emits four white flashes every 40 seconds. The lighthouse was automated in 1969 and has been a protected historic building since 1998. It is the oldest stone tower lighthouse still in operation in Norway.
The history of the lighthouse dates back to 1700 when a "bucket light" fuelled by coal was first constructed. The bucket contained 170 liters of coal and was lit from 20 August to 20 March during the night. A replica model of the bucket light was installed in 2005 near the current lighthouse. Today, the Kvitsøy Lighthouse is preserved as a protected historic building and continues to serve as an important aid to navigation in the region.
