The Low Head Lighthouse is located in Low Head, Tasmania, approximately 7 kilometers north of George Town on the east side of the mouth of the Tamar River. It was built in 1833 and is considered Australia's oldest continuously used pilot station. The lighthouse features a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern, made of brick and standing 19 meters tall, with a focal height of 43 meters.
The lighthouse was constructed using convict labor and was the third lighthouse to be built in Australia. It was automated in 1995 and is now unmanned. The lighthouse has a range of 43 kilometers and features a Fresnel lens and a tungsten-halogen lamp. It also has a fog signal, a Type G diaphone, which was installed in 1929.
The history of the Low Head Lighthouse dates back to 1798 when George Bass and Matthew Flinders made landfall at Port Dalrymple, now George Town. The area proved to be hazardous for shipping, and several serious accidents occurred, leading to the recommendation that a lightstation be built at Low Head in 1826. The lighthouse has played a significant role in the maritime history of Tasmania, and it continues to be an important aid to navigation today, managed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
