The Low Isles Light is a historic lighthouse located on Low Island, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Situated approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Port Douglas, the island marks the entrance to the shipping channel into the harbour. Built in 1874, the lighthouse was first lit in 1878, making it the first in Far North Queensland and the first to illuminate the Inner Passage of the Great Barrier Reef.
The lighthouse features a conical tower with a balcony and lantern, constructed using a timber frame clad with galvanized iron. Its original oil wick light was upgraded to kerosene in 1923, electricity in 1963, and finally converted to solar power in 1993. The site can be visited, but the tower is closed. The lighthouse is currently owned and managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, with one of the original keeper residences serving as a research station.
The Low Isles Light has an interesting history, recommended for construction in 1876 and built the following year. The original structures were compact due to the island's size, and only the lighthouse has survived. The keeper's residences were rebuilt in the 1960s, and the site has undergone various upgrades and transformations over the years.
