The Negril Lighthouse is located in Negril Point, Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica. It was built in 1894 by the French company Barber & Bernard, approximately 1.5 miles south-southeast of the westernmost tip of the island. This lighthouse is one of the earliest concrete lighthouses and features a reinforced concrete tower that is 27 meters tall.
The tower is tapered and cylindrical in shape, with a balcony and lantern, and is painted white. Its foundation is a 14-foot deep tank of water that helps to balance and secure the tower in the event of an earthquake. The lighthouse is automated and emits a flash of light every 2 seconds, alternating between red and white. The light is 31 meters above sea level and was initially operated by gas, before being converted to acetylene in 1956 and solar energy in 1985.
The Negril Lighthouse is a well-known attraction in the area and is maintained by the Port Authority of Jamaica. It is staffed by keepers who reside in adjacent one-story frame houses. The site is popular with tourists and offers a unique glimpse into Jamaica's maritime history. With its rich history and unique design, the Negril Lighthouse is a significant landmark in Jamaica and continues to serve as an important aid to navigation.
