Nobbys Head Light is a historical lighthouse located at Nobbys Head, a headland on the south side of Newcastle Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. The lighthouse was first built in 1821, but the current structure was constructed in 1858 with a cylindrical tower and a lantern. It stands at a height of 32 feet and has a focal height of 115 feet.
The lighthouse was designed by Alexander Dawson, the New South Wales Government Architect, and was originally attended by three lighthouse keepers. In 1934, the light was electrified and automated, and in 1935, it became fully automated. Today, the lighthouse is operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and is an active aid to navigation. It is also a historic site and is open to the public on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
The lighthouse has an interesting history, with the first beacon in the area dating back to a coal fire set on Signal Head in 1821. The coal fire was later replaced by a metal device burning oil, but it was not reliable and was soon changed back to coal. The current lighthouse has been in operation since 1858 and has undergone several upgrades and changes over the years.
