The Phare de Nividic, located on the island of Ushant in Brittany, France, is one of the five major lighthouses on the island. Built in 1912, it was the first automatic lighthouse in the world and features an octagonal tower with a balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 36 meters. The lighthouse has been listed as a historical monument since 2017.
The Phare de Nividic has a unique history, with construction taking place from 1912 to 1936, but it only operated for four years before being abandoned due to German occupation during World War II. It was returned to service in the early 1950s and has since been maintained and operated by the French authorities. The lighthouse has undergone significant changes and upgrades over the years, including the addition of a concrete belt to strengthen its base and the installation of lighting and foghorn equipment.
Today, the Phare de Nividic remains an important navigational aid in the region, guiding ships safely through the treacherous waters of the Iroise Sea. Its automated system allows for remote control and monitoring, ensuring that it continues to provide reliable assistance to mariners. The lighthouse's rich history and unique features make it a valuable part of France's cultural and maritime heritage.
