The Point Lonsdale Lighthouse is located at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, Australia, near the township of Point Lonsdale. It stands on the western side of the entrance to the bay, overlooking a treacherous stretch of water known as The Rip, which is the only seaborne approach to Melbourne. The lighthouse was built in 1902 and features a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern, constructed from reinforced concrete.
The lighthouse has a height of 21.3 meters and a focal height of 36.6 meters, with a white tower and black lantern and dome. The light has a range of 22 kilometers for its white light and 19 kilometers for its red light. The lighthouse was automated in 1999 but is still operated by the Victorian Ports Corporation. The surrounding signal station and observation room were added in 1950 and continue to be staffed, controlling the movements of commercial shipping in the area.
The Point Lonsdale Lighthouse has a rich history, with the first navigation aid at the site being erected in 1852. The current lighthouse replaced a wooden tower in 1902, which was later dismantled and used for firewood. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several changes, including the replacement of its original oil lamp with acetylene and later electric lights. Today, the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse remains an important aid to navigation, guiding ships safely through the treacherous waters of The Rip.
