Prong's Lighthouse

Prong's Lighthouse is located at the southernmost point of Mumbai, India, in the Colaba area, marking the entrance to Mumbai Harbour. The lighthouse was built in 1844, with the current structure being lit in 1871. It is a tapered cylindrical tower with a double balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 41 meters. The lighthouse has a distinctive black basement, white tower with a horizontal red band, and a white lantern.

The lighthouse has an interesting history, with the first lighthouse in the area being built by modifying an onshore watch tower constructed by the Portuguese. The current Prong's Lighthouse was built later, in 1875, by Thomas Ormiston at a cost of Rs. 620,255. The lighthouse had a cannon during the British rule to secure the bay. Once completed, the older Colaba Point Lighthouse was rendered obsolete and demolished.

Today, Prong's Lighthouse is a Grade-I heritage structure, managed by the Mumbai Port Trust. It is still an important aid to navigation, with a light characteristic of Fl W 10s and a range of 23 nautical miles. The lighthouse is an important part of Mumbai's maritime history and a notable landmark in the city.

Light and tower

The light has a focal height of 41 metres. Its light characteristic is Fl W 10s. It carries a 1st order Fresnel lens. It was first lit in 1871. It is managed by Mumbai Port Trust.
