The Richmond River Light is an active lighthouse located in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia. It was built in 1866 and lit in 1880, with the current structure being constructed between 1878 and 1880. The lighthouse features a cylindrical stone tower with a balcony and lantern, and it stands at a height of 25 feet. The light is visible for 14 nautical miles and has a characteristic of flashing four times every 16 seconds.
The lighthouse was designed by James Barnet, who also designed four other similar lighthouses in the region. The original light was a fixed 4th order catadioptric apparatus, but it has since been replaced with a 2nd order Chance Brothers Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was automated in 1920 and is currently managed by NSW Maritime.
The Richmond River Light has an interesting history, serving as a guiding light for ships entering the Richmond River port. It was also used as a leading light into the river, in conjunction with a steamer's masthead lantern. The nearby Lighthouse Beach, one of Ballina's main beaches, is named after the lighthouse. Today, the Richmond River Light remains an important aid to navigation and a notable landmark in the region.
