The São Thomé Lighthouse is located in Praia do Farol (Lighthouse Beach), in the Brazilian municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro. The lighthouse was built in 1877 by a French firm and inaugurated in 1882, commemorating the birthday of Princess Isabel. It stands at a height of 45 meters and has a focal height of 49 meters, with a light range of 40 nautical miles.
The lighthouse was designed by the French company Barbier & Fenestre, based on the openwork lighthouse design of Swedish engineer Nils Gustaf von Heidenstam. The structure is made of a special corrosion-resistant iron, which has allowed it to remain in good condition. The lantern was originally surrounded by a glass pane and fitted with a 3-centimeter-thick glass lens, emitting 8 fan-shaped lanes of light. In 1967, a fire damaged the lantern, and it was replaced by a lower headlight, reducing the range to 19 miles.
The São Thomé Lighthouse has played an important role in the region's history, particularly during World War II, when it served as a landing site for helicopters carrying supplies to the coast. Today, the lighthouse operates with commercial electric power, but it still has two generators that can run on kerosene if necessary. It lights up according to sunset time and makes a full turn in 68 seconds.
