Savudrija Lighthouse

The Savudrija Lighthouse is located in Savudrija, Croatia, at the northern end of the Istrian peninsula, close to the Slovenian border. It was completed in 1818 and is the oldest operational lighthouse in the Adriatic. The lighthouse has a cylindrical stone tower with a lantern and double gallery, standing at a height of 29 meters, with a focal height of 36 meters. It has a range of 30 nautical miles and emits three flashes of white light every 15 seconds.

The Savudrija Lighthouse has an interesting history, having been designed by architect Pietro Nobile and funded by the Trieste Chamber of Commerce. It was initially lit with coal gas, making it the first lighthouse to be designed and operated in this way. However, due to ongoing problems, it was soon replaced with an oil-fueled system. The lighthouse has undergone changes over the years, including an increase in height by 10 meters in the late 19th century.

Today, the Savudrija Lighthouse is operated by the state-owned company Plovput and is still staffed by lighthouse keepers who help maintain the site. The lighthouse has also been made available for rent as holiday accommodation since 2000. A romantic tale is associated with the lighthouse, which claims that it was built by Count Metternich for a beautiful Croatian lady he met at a ball in Vienna. The lighthouse has been depicted in a set of commemorative stamps by the Croatian postal service and continues to be an important aid to navigation in the area.
