Sea Hill Light

The Sea Hill Light is a lighthouse located on the northwest point of Curtis Island in Queensland, Australia. It was constructed in 1873 or 1876 to mark the east side of the entrance to Keppel Bay, and its purpose was to guide vessels on passage to Fitzroy River and Port Alma. The original lighthouse, also known as the Little Sea Hill Light, is a small structure made of hardwood frame clad with corrugated iron, with a square form and a height of only 20 feet.

The first lighthouse was relocated in the 1920s and is now on display at the Gladstone Maritime Museum. A second lighthouse was constructed in the 1920s to replace the first one, but it was deactivated in 2006 and demolished in early 2009. The station was not completely abandoned, and a new fiberglass beacon was likely installed, displaying a light characteristic of two white flashes every six seconds.

The Sea Hill Light has an interesting history, being the first lighthouse in Queensland of its design, which was then used in seven more lighthouses. The original lighthouse is now a part of the Gladstone Maritime Museum, and its design and features are still notable today, with a gallery and a lantern top, and a traditional white and red color scheme. The location of the lighthouse played an important role in guiding vessels through the entrance to Keppel Bay, and its history reflects the development of navigation and maritime safety in the region.
