The Sombrero Lighthouse is a vital navigation aid located on Sombrero island in the Caribbean, marking the Anegada Passage, a key route from Europe into the region. The lighthouse stands almost 51 meters above sea level, making it a prominent landmark in the area.
The first Sombrero Lighthouse was built in 1868 by an American company that extracted phosphate from the island. The tower was a circular pyramidal structure on a concrete base, with a balcony and lantern. It underwent significant repairs and upgrades, including a major renovation in 1931. However, the lighthouse suffered damage from Hurricane Donna in 1960, leading to the construction of a new tower in 1962. This second lighthouse stood at 28 meters high and was staffed until 2001.
The current automated lighthouse was installed in 2001 by Trinity House. It features a 15-meter tall white cylindrical tower with a balcony, positioned 28 meters above sea level. The lighthouse emits a single white flash every 10 seconds, visible up to 17 nautical miles away. The Government of Anguilla manages the lighthouse, with the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources responsible for its maintenance.
