The Song Do Gap Lighthouse is located on a headland in eastern North Korea, specifically in the South Hamgyong province. It is situated near the city of Sinpo, approximately 13 miles east of the city, and serves as the eastern entrance to the Yanghwa Man. The headland is a dark promontory joined to the coast by a low white sand bar and has two summits that can appear to be small islands when observed from a distance.
The lighthouse on Songdo Point stands at 59 meters tall and is active, although it is closed to the public. However, the reliability of navigational aids on the east coast of North Korea is considered unreliable by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The lighthouse has undergone name changes throughout its history, with its original name being Shōtō-kō during the Japanese occupation of Korea. It is now also known as Songdo Point or simply Songdo.
The history of the Song Do Gap Lighthouse is not extensively documented, but it is known to have been an important landmark for navigation in the Sea of Japan. With its unique location and prominent structure, the lighthouse remains a notable feature of North Korea's eastern coastline. Despite its restricted access, the lighthouse continues to serve its purpose as a navigational aid, albeit with some uncertainty regarding its reliability.
