The Sõrve Lighthouse is located in Saaremaa Parish, on the island of Saaremaa, in Estonia. It is situated on the Sõrve Peninsula and has a long history dating back to 1646, when the first lighthouse was built. The original structure was wooden, but it was later replaced with a stone structure in 1650 and designed by Heinrich Stegeling. The lighthouse has undergone several reconstructions and renovations, including one in 1770, when it was rebuilt as a rectangular structure, and another in 1863, when it was fitted with a catoptric apparatus.
The current Sõrve Lighthouse was built in 1960, replacing a temporary wooden structure that had served as a signal point between 1945 and 1960. The current lighthouse is a cylindrical concrete tower with a double balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 52 meters. It is equipped with a black tower and a horizontal wide white lower band, and has a range of 15 nautical miles. The lighthouse has been automated and is currently managed by the Estonian authorities.
The Sõrve Lighthouse has a rich history and has survived several wars, including World War I and World War II. During World War II, the original structure was destroyed in 1944, and a temporary wooden structure was built in 1949. Today, the Sõrve Lighthouse is a notable tourist attraction and a significant part of Estonia's maritime heritage.
