The St. Martin's Island Lighthouse is located on Saint Martin's Island, a small coral island in the north-eastern part of the Bay of Bengal, about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. The island has an area of only 3 km2 and forms the southernmost part of Bangladesh. The lighthouse has a concrete base and a metal skeletal tower with a square pyramidal shape and a balcony and lantern. It is marked with white and red horizontal bands and a white and red horizontal daymark on the top.
The island has a rich history, with the first settlement established by Arabian merchants in the 18th century. The island was later named after the then Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong, Mr. O.M. Martin, during the British occupation. The lighthouse is currently managed by the Bangladesh Department of Shipping. The island's unique location and history make it an interesting tourist destination, with a beautiful coral reef and a stunning sunset.
Unfortunately, the island has been subject to tourist restrictions due to Myanmar border tensions. As of 2025, a nine-month tourist restriction has been imposed, allowing only the Cox's Bazar-St. Martin route to remain open. Despite these restrictions, the St. Martin's Island Lighthouse remains a notable landmark on the island, guiding ships and boats through the Bay of Bengal. The lighthouse's unique design and colorful markings make it a notable feature of the island's landscape.
