Storholmen Lighthouse is located in Giske Municipality, Møre og Romsdal, Norway, on a tiny skerry about 6 km north of the island of Erkna and 8 km northwest of the island of Vigra. The lighthouse was built in 1920 and features a cast iron tower with a cylindrical shape, balcony, and lantern, standing on a concrete base. The tower is painted with a white base, red body, and an orange lower band.
The lighthouse is an active aid to navigation, with a light intensity of 58800 candela. However, it is not lit during the summer months due to the midnight sun, and is only operational from July 16 to May 21. The remote location of the lighthouse made it difficult to access, with goods and people having to be hoisted onto the island from the sea during calm weather.
The lighthouse has an interesting history, with transportation to the island being done by helicopter from 1970 until its automation in 1980. The helicopter landing pad is narrow, requiring experienced pilots to navigate. Today, the Storholmen Lighthouse remains an important aid to navigation in the region, and its unique location and history make it a notable landmark in Norway.
