Veli Rat Lighthouse

The Veli Rat Lighthouse is a significant landmark located on the Croatian island of Dugi Otok, near the village of Veli Rat. The lighthouse was built in 1849 and stands at a height of 36 meters, with a lantern and single gallery.

The lighthouse is an active aid to navigation, with a range of 22 nautical miles and a characteristic light pattern of two flashes of white light every 20 seconds. The lighthouse is also known for its unique architecture, with a single-storey keeper's house built around the base of the tower. The keeper's house has yellow walls, which were allegedly painted using a mixture of thousands of eggs to give better consistency and protection against the salt air.

Today, the Veli Rat Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, with a lighthouse keeper and their family living on site. The lighthouse has also been made available for rent as holiday accommodation since 2000, and in 2014, it was featured on a set of commemorative stamps by the Croatian postal service.
