The Vila Real de Santo António Lighthouse is located in the Algarve region of Portugal, on the right bank of the river Guadiana. The lighthouse was built in 1923, after many years of planning and discussion regarding the best construction method, as it is situated in a sandy area. It stands 46 meters high and features a third-order Fresnel lens with a range of 26 nautical miles.
The lighthouse has an interesting history, with construction first planned in 1884 but not beginning until 1916. It replaced an earlier lighthouse called the Farolinho de ferro, or little iron lighthouse. The light was originally obtained using incandescence from petroleum vapour, but operations were electrified in 1927 and the lighthouse was connected to the public grid in 1947. The lighthouse was automated in 1989, and since then, there has been no lighthouse keeper.
Today, the Vila Real de Santo António Lighthouse is still in operation, serving as a reference for navigators in both Portuguese and Spanish waters. The top of its circular tower offers views of the coast of Andalusia in Spain and the Castle of Castro Marim. The lighthouse is equipped with a lift, installed in 1957, which provides access to the light, and its focal length of 500 mm allows it to guide ships safely through the waters.
