Vittoria Light

The Vittoria Light, also known as the Victory Lighthouse, is located in Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. It stands on the Hill of Gretta, off the Strada del Friuli, and serves the Gulf of Trieste. The lighthouse was built in 1927 and features a stone tower with a tapered cylindrical shape, crowned by a bronze statue. It is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world, standing at a height of approximately 223 feet.

The idea for the lighthouse arose during World War I, following the Italian capture of Kobarid from Austria-Hungary. The original plan was to build the lighthouse on the coast of Istria near Pula, but the location was eventually changed to the Hill of Gretta due to its ideal height and solid foundations. The lighthouse was designed by architect Arduino Berlam, and its construction was directed by Guido Cirilli.

The Vittoria Light is an active lighthouse, managed by the Marina Militare. It has a focal height of approximately 378 feet and a range of 22 nautical miles. The lighthouse features a Fresnel lens and is considered an important aid to navigation in the Gulf of Trieste. Its rich history and striking design make it a notable landmark in the region. Despite its age, the lighthouse remains an important part of the maritime landscape, serving as a beacon for ships and a symbol of Italian victory.
