The Bastøy Lighthouse is located on the island of Bastøy in the Oslofjorden, about 4 km southeast of the town of Horten in Vestfold county, Norway. The lighthouse was first established in 1840 as a stone house with a low tower. It was later replaced by a second lighthouse in 1918, which featured a square tower with a balcony and lantern.
The second lighthouse was automated in 1986 and subsequently deactivated, being replaced by a simple metal pole with a light. The current lighthouse has a focal height of 13 meters and is managed by the Norwegian Correctional Service. The original stone tower was 14 meters tall and had a distinctive white and red color scheme.
The Bastøy Lighthouse has an interesting history, having been rebuilt and modified over the years to meet the changing needs of navigation in the area. Today, it remains an important aid to navigation, despite being automated and relatively simple in design. The lighthouse is also notable for its location on the island of Bastøy, which is steeped in history and has played an important role in the region's maritime activities.
