The Batticaloa Lighthouse, also known as Mattuwaran, is located in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, near the estuary in Palameenmadu. It was built in 1913 and stands at a height of 28 meters, with a tapered cylindrical tower and a balcony and lantern on a stone basement. The lighthouse is painted white and has a focal height of 27 meters, emitting a flash of white light every three seconds.
The lighthouse is situated around 5 km from Batticaloa city, on Bar Road, and can be accessed by taking Lake Road near Kallady Bridge and proceeding along Sinna Uppodai Lagoon. The area surrounding the lighthouse is suitable for cycling or walking, offering a pleasant experience for visitors. The lighthouse is managed by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, which is responsible for its maintenance and operation.
The Batticaloa Lighthouse has an interesting history, with an old lighthouse built by the British in the same location.
