Blackrock Castle is a castellated fortification located in Blackrock, Ireland, approximately 2 kilometers from Cork city centre. The castle was originally developed as a coastal defence fortification in the 16th century to protect upper Cork Harbour and port. The fort was built in 1582, and a round tower was constructed around 1600 to safeguard against pirates.
The castle has undergone several rebuilds and renovations over the centuries, including a major rebuild after a fire in 1829. In 2002, an observatory was added to the castle. Today, the castle serves as a visitor centre, observatory, and restaurant. It is owned by Cork City Council and is open to the public. The castle's limestone and ashlar masonry structure stands at an impressive 5 stories tall, making it a notable landmark in the area.
