Roche's Point Lighthouse is located at the entrance to Cork Harbour in Ireland. The lighthouse was first established on June 4, 1817, to guide ships into the harbour, but the original tower was replaced in 1835 with a larger one that stands 49 feet high with a diameter of 12 feet. The current lighthouse has a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern, and is painted white.
The lighthouse has undergone several changes over the years, including the installation of a Second Order Fresnel lens in 1876, which is still in use today. The light was converted to electric in 1970 and automated in 1995. The lighthouse has a range of 20 nautical miles for its white light and 16 nautical miles for its red light. The light is exhibited day and night, with red sectors marking navigational hazards approaching the harbour.
Roche's Point Lighthouse has an interesting history, with its original light apparatus consisting of ten Argand oil lamps and ten catoptric reflectors. The lighthouse was converted to electric in 1970 and its character was altered in 1993 to a flashing white and red light every three seconds. The fog signal was deactivated in 2011. Today, the lighthouse continues to guide ships into Cork Harbour, and its light can be seen from the sea, although the part of the light that can be seen from land is unintensified to avoid disturbing those on shore.
