Cabo Frio Lighthouse is an active lighthouse located on the southern point of Ilha do Cabo Frio, also known as Focinho do Cabo, in the municipality of Arraial do Cabo, Brazil. The lighthouse was first lit on February 17, 1836, and has undergone two significant changes. The first lighthouse was a 5-meter-tall cylindrical stone tower, but it was not always operational due to frequent fog cover. The second lighthouse, built in 1861, was a 15-meter-tall cylindrical stone tower with a balcony and lantern and was equipped with a range of 20 nautical miles.
The current lighthouse, built in 1926, is a 16-meter-tall white cylindrical cast iron tower with a balcony and lantern. The lantern emits a white flash every 10 seconds and is visible up to 49 nautical miles. The lighthouse is managed by the Brazilian Navy and is identified by the country code number BR-2400. Due to the difficulty of reaching the lighthouse from the pier, an helipad was built nearby the keeper's housing.
The Cabo Frio Lighthouse has a rich history and has undergone significant changes over the years. The first lighthouse was built on the highest hill of the island, but the second lighthouse was built on a lower altitude due to frequent fog cover. The current lighthouse is a significant improvement, with a range of 49 nautical miles and a white flash every 10 seconds. The lighthouse is an important aid to navigation for ships in the area and is a significant landmark in the region.
