The Calaburras Lighthouse, also known as Faro de Calaburras in Spanish, is located at Punta de Calaburras near Mijas, in the Málaga province of Andalusia, Spain. The lighthouse was initially built in 1863, making it a significant landmark in the region. It was later rebuilt in 1928 to its current form, which features a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern.
The current lighthouse stands at a height of 25 meters, significantly taller than the original 13.5-meter masonry tower. The light signal from the lighthouse flashes every 5 seconds and has a maximum visibility range of 18 nautical miles, serving as an important guide for ships and planes navigating the Strait of Gibraltar. The lighthouse was the first air/sea lighthouse in Spain and is the main beacon of the Málaga province.
The Calaburras Lighthouse has an interesting history, having been upgraded over the years to improve its functionality. Its signal became automatic and electric in 1949, enhancing its efficiency and reliability. Today, the lighthouse is managed by the Autoridad Portuaria de Málaga and continues to play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of maritime and aerial traffic in the region.
