The Carbonera Lighthouse is located in La Alcaidesa, Andalusia, Spain, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. It was originally built in 1588 as a 16th-century watchtower commissioned by King Felipe II and was later restored in the 18th century. The lighthouse features a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern attached to a 1-storey keeper’s house, standing at a height of 14 meters and a focal height of 39 meters.
The lighthouse began working as an active lighthouse in 1989, after a conversion project from tower to lighthouse was undertaken in the late 1980s. It is currently managed by the Port Authority of Algeciras and is protected as a monument of cultural interest by Spain's Ministry of Culture. Although not open to the public for visits, the lighthouse can be accessed via several dirt tracks leading up from the beach.
The Carbonera Lighthouse has a rich history, having been included in the Port of Algeciras Bay Authority’s Conservation & Historical Asset Enhancement Plan in 2021. It remains an important landmark in the region, offering stunning views of the surrounding area. The lighthouse is also notable for being situated near a small ruin of the Casa de Carbonera, a charcoal-maker's house, which adds to its historical significance.
